Barbican Young Changemakers is a program that empowers young people to influence change at the Barbican Centre. I participated, collaborating with the Creative Learning team and senior leadership on strategic initiatives.
Our focus was on the Barbican Renewal project and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) efforts. We used our own experiences to inform how the Barbican could be more inclusive, with my focus on Deaf/disabled audiences.
Our recommendations, presented to the Barbican board, secured their support and even led to a summer exhibition showcasing the program’s impact.
Motivated by a desire to make the arts accessible for young people and underrepresented groups, I joined to gain a deeper understanding of inclusivity challenges. While co-creating solutions with diverse peers wasn’t always easy, it proved to be a rewarding experience. My hope is that our recommendations will create lasting change, making the Barbican more welcoming and inspiring other arts institutions to follow suit.
